Item Description
NORWAY: NASJONALHJELPEN label; issued during the Nazi OCCUPATION UNDER QUISLING'S DIRECTIVE, tied to lottery card w/ 15o +10o OLAV SEMI-POSTAL (SCOTT #B44), OPDAL 1946 CANCEL is clear (AND REPEATED AT L), printed OSLO ADDRESS, as always with these lottery cards, THE OLAV STAMP was also for NASJONALHJELPEN, BUT IT WAS VERY DIFFERENT AFTER THE WAR, SOME SOILING ON REVERSE BUT FRESH AND VF!It is possible the sender was unaware that the label was of nazi origin (it has no swastika on it). But don't let the sun motif fool you: the nazis felt the sun represented their inevitable victory and worked its way into many logos (like the sun cross on norwegian official stamps of this period). There was also the infamous black sun. This bright and bucolic sun looks more benign but it was issued in 1943 under tight nazi control. You would think the sender would have been more alert: opdal (later oppdal) was the site of a nazi forced labor camp (stalag 308). very collectible and intriguing item.
