Item Description

Wonderfully descriptive letter of mid 19th century Rome written by then 12 year old Robert Bowne Minturn to a friend at the start of the families 18 month long European vacation in 1848-1849.

The Minturn family was a well known New England merchant and shipping family and owned the Clipper Flying Cloud. The “2 cts” cancel is scarce, the letter describing Rome from the eyes of a literate 12 year old boy is unique.

The last page has a missing piece with the loss of 2 or 3 words from the postscript (see jpeg) and a few of the usual seam splits are present - but truly a one of a kind historic piece.
