Item Description

This envelope measures 4¼ by about 3¾ inches. It was addressed to Susannah Cox at Winchester, Indiana, and postmarked at Paul, Tennessee, August 16, 1897. The community of Paul, Tennessee, doesn't seem to exist today according to Google. I found one list presented by the Tennessee Secretary of State that listed Paul in Lawrence County with a post office in operation from 1891 to 1903.

The stamp is probably Scott 267. The obliterator is a four-ring bullseye. The pencil notation reads, “if not called for in 10 days return to Ruth O. Pickett Paul Lawrence Co Tenn.” The “97” was probably added by the Cox family genealogist. He did this routinely when removing contents of these covers for archiving purposes.

One of the two back stamps is from Pleasant Point, another Lawrence County, Tennessee, DPO. That cancel date was August 16, 1897, as well. A receipt postmark on the back is from the destination post office at Winchester, Indiana. That date was August 17, 1897.

The cover was opened at the right edge and the contents have been removed. The recipient probably placed the pencil notation on the back. She and her sister often noted the dates on which they answered letters.
