Postcard from Poland (1952). On the way to work, Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp during World War II. Location and history: Located in southern Poland, near the town of Oświęcim, whose German name is Auschwitz. It was opened in 1940 and was originally a detention center for political prisoners. Evolution: Over time, it developed into a network of camps where Jews and other "enemies" of the Nazi regime were exterminated, often in gas chambers or used as slave labor. Victims: During the Holocaust, over 1 million people lost their lives at Auschwitz. Liberation: In January 1945, as the Soviet army approached, the Nazis abandoned the camp and thousands of emaciated prisoners and piles of corpses were discovered by Soviet troops. Museum: Today Auschwitz-Birkenau is a state museum dedicated to the memory of the victims and the preservation of the site and historical objects. Where to go to work? On the way to work.
