65 Million Years ago, as the Mesozoic era ended and the Cenozoic era debuted, a whole new variety of creatures emerged on Earth -- THE MAMMALS! The US issued an attractive set of 4 of these warm-blooded beasties that would soon give rise to many species we know today . . before they, themselves, became extinct.

These handsome and popular stamps were designed and illustrated by the great wildlife artist Don Balke, who gave us the sheet of 50 State Birds and Flowers, the sheet of 50 North American Wildlife animals, the 13¢ CAPEX issue of 1978, and many more!

Here are the 4 prehistoric species - the Eohippus, the Mastodon, the Wooly Mammoth, and the Saber-Tooth Cat, all gathered at the Tar Pit Café enjoying a cup of the local brew before the Saber-Tooth Maitre de serves them (for) dinner!!

The cover is regular-sized to fit in your album, but unfolds to a 'mammoth' 12 1/4 inches to reveal the entire scene!

The cachet was printed in green and brown on cream-colored index stock, then hand cut, scored and assembled. The Plate Number Block of all 4 designs is cancelled with two clean strikes of the USPS CAPEX Station round dater used in Toronto, Ontario on the first day of issue.

This cover is the last of its kind and about to go extinct . . . it's the only one we still have!!
