Item Description
GLÍMA is an ancient and revered sport in Iceland, brought there by the early Norwegian settlers and officially practiced since 1325! It is a form of wrestling that rewards technique over brute strength, as participants grab straps fastened around their opponent's waist, and try to topple them.In 2006 Iceland honored the sport by issuing a souvenir sheet depicting the Girdle of Grettir - the most prestigious award in individual sport in Iceland, awarded to each year's Glíma champion.
This cover shows four Puffins struggling against their opponents, with one of the birds performing the vaunted 'Wedgie Maneuver'! This FDC is franked with the handsome souvenir sheet and is cancelled with two nice strikes of the pictorial First Day of Issue cancel from Rykjavík on September 21 of 2006.
The cachet is handcolored, and as shown on the reverse, this is cover #9 of only 10 sent to Iceland for servicing!
