Scarce 1888 Norway Hammerfest Local Post 2 Øre Steep Mountainous Landscape Unused No Gum This Privately Issued Local Postage Stamp From Hammerfest, Norway, Bears The Denomination Of "2 Øre" And Is Inscribed "Bypost," Indicating Its Use For Intra-City Mail. The Design Features A Detailed Engraving Of The Steep Mountainous Landscape Near The Northern Coastline, With Small Boats In The Foreground, Reflecting The Harsh Yet Scenic Arctic Environment Of Hammerfest—One Of The Northernmost Towns In The World. These Types Of Local Post Stamps Were Typically Produced In The Late 19th And Early 20th Centuries By Private Firms To Handle Local Deliveries In Areas Where National Postal Services Were Limited Or Cost-Prohibitive.
