Scarce 1919 Republic Of German Austria Revenue Or Control Stamp Portrait Of A Woman Wearing A Phrygian Cap Used Light CancelPlease See Information Obtained In Second Photo On The Stamp Boards Forum ( Is A Green Commemorative Fiscal Or Cinderella Stamp Bearing Only The Year 1919, Featuring A Finely Engraved Profile Portrait Of A Woman Wearing A Phrygian Cap, A Classical Symbol Of Liberty And Republican Ideals, Surrounded By An Ornate Decorative Frame Of Scrollwork And Foliage. This Stamp Is Known As The “German Austria 1919 Kontrollstempel” And Was Issued During The Brief Existence Of The Republic Of German Austria, The Successor State That Emerged After The Collapse Of The Austro-Hungarian Empire At The End Of World War I In 1918. The Republic Of German Austria Was Proclaimed On November 12, 1918, And Intended To Represent The German-Speaking Portions Of The Former Habsburg Monarchy, Seeking Union With Germany But Blocked From Doing So By The Allied Powers. The Republic Existed As A Transitional State Until The Treaty Of Saint-Germain Came Into Force In September 1919, Which Officially Established The Republic Of Austria Within New, Reduced Borders And Forbade Union With Germany. The Overprint “D.O. Kontroll-Stempel” Identifies This Stamp As A Revenue Or Control Stamp Used To Validate Bonds, Securities, Or Financial Certificates During This Period Of Political And Economic Upheaval. Many Surviving Examples Are Found Affixed To Bonds Issued Before The War, Including Those Managed By J. Henry Schröder & Co And N.M. Rothschild & Sons In London, And Were Later Overstamped “Unsecured” When Payments On These Bonds Ceased In The Wake Of Austria’s Postwar Economic Crisis And Hyperinflation.
