Vintage Circa 1915–1917 US WW I Propaganda Poster Stamp National Defense. We Can’t Do It With A Sling Shot Seal Of The Reserve Officers Association Of The United States Unused No Gum This Poster Stamp Is A Pre World War I Propaganda Piece Advocating For Stronger United States National Defense, Issued Circa 1915–1917 During The Preparedness Movement. The Illustration Shows A David And Goliath Theme, With A Giant Armored Warrior Towering Over A Small Civilian Figure Armed Only With A Slingshot, Emphasizing The Inadequacy Of America’s Military Resources At The Time. At The Top Appears The Text National Defense In Large Red Capitals, While The Caption At The Bottom Reads We Can’t Do It With A Sling Shot, Driving Home The Message That Modern War Could Not Be Won With Outdated Or Insufficient Means. Of Special Significance Is The Seal Of The Reserve Officers Association Of The United States, Positioned Beside The Civilian Figure. Although The Reserve Officers Association Was Formally Founded In 1922, The Seal Here Reflects Its Predecessor Roots Within Informal Reserve Officer Networks Active During The Preparedness Movement. These Groups Advocated For A Stronger Standing Army, Expanded Officer Training, And Legislative Reform, Efforts That Contributed To The National Defense Act Of 1916. The Stamp’s Imagery And Sponsorship Together Reveal How Civilian And Military Advocates Sought To Influence Public Opinion Toward Greater Military Readiness In The Years Immediately Preceding America’s Entry Into World War I. The Stamp Is Printed In Gray And Red On White Paper With Strong Line Work, Clear Typography, And A Powerful Symbolic Message. It Represents A Striking Example Of Early Twentieth Century American Propaganda Using Poster Stamps As Affordable And Collectible Vehicles For National Messaging. Visible Text (Rewritten In Sentence Form): National Defense. We Can’t Do It With A Sling Shot.
