These cancels on OFFICIALS are Rarer than on US definitive stamps. You'll see leafs, masonics, cogwheels, masks, kicking mules, stars, fleurettes, grids, geometrics, and other fancy cancels! Many have red, blue or purple cancels! More than a thousand stamps from 1870's to early 1880's!US official stamps, for use by government offices, were issued between 1873 and 1879. The Act of Congress, approved on March 3, 1873, abolished the franking privilege for government mail and provided for the issue of official postage stamps for each government department.Some stamps may have a small or minor fault that you can see in the scan. If there is a major fault such as a crease, tear, or thin you can't see, I'll do my best to mention it. For these fancy cancels, your cost is based both on the rarity of the "cancel" and the Scott Catalog Value.
