Item Description
Iceland Post for many years issued two stamps per year celebrating their native birdlife. All beautifully illustrated by Iceland's master stamp designer Throstur Magnusson.Here are the 1995 entrants in that avian progression - the Common Redpoll and the High-Value Common Snipe. Their issuance also served to recognize the 'European Nature Conservation Year - 1995'.
This handcolored Puffin Cachet shows the two birds on a putty colored handmade envelope bearing two nice strikes of the official First Day pictorial cancel used in Reykjavik on 18 September 1995. The cancel shows the 'pinned leaf' logo of the Conservation Year, and it is also part of the design in the cachet.
The reverse shows that this is cover #5 of only 6 covers sent to Iceland for servicing.
