Spain 1828 French Expeditionary Force Army Stampless Cover FL Cadiz to France Stampless folded letter, with contents, datelined Cadiz, 10th June, 1828, rated "10" (decimes, due) in manuscript, handstamped "(R) / ARM D'ESPAGNE", to Toulon, France, with c.d.s. arrival backstamp (26 June), a fine military entire sent from a member of Unit "R", which was based at Chiclana de La Frontera some 30km from Cadiz.In July 1822, a revolt by the liberal element in Spain resulted in the imprisonment of King Ferdinand VII by the Cortes (Parliament). The following April, King Louis XVIII of France sent an expeditionary force of 100,000 men to the aid of his relative. The French troops advanced through Spain and entered Madrid on May 24, continuing on to Seville. Parliament fled to Cadiz, bringing the King and his family with them as hostages. However, in June, the Duc d’Angouleme entered Cadiz, and liberated the King and his family, restoring Ferdinand to the throne.
