Item Description

Stampless Folded Letter, manuscript Franktown Va Augt 25 Paid 18 3/5 rate, addressed to Mr. John L Harmanson, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is a four page letter with margin and cross writing from his sister, who signs as "cary". John Littleton Harmanson was born in 1821 in Accomack County, Virginia. He attended Dickinson (then Carlisle College), class of 1843. He attended the University of Virginia in 1845 - 1846, earning an M.D. degree before furthering his studies at Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. He served as assistant surgeon in the Confederate army before taking up practice in Puntuteague, Virginia. His half-brother, Lafayette (referenced in the letter as "Fay") attended UVa in the sessions for 1844 - 1845, receiving the B.L. degree. He practiced law in Norfolk, Virginia. Caroline Evans Harmanson was born in 1816 and died in 1846.The letter discusses sister Sarah's (Sarah Satchell Harmanson, 1814-1844) illness, John Littleton's prospects of establishing a school when he returns from Carlisle, "brother Fay has the biblical fever, he has been quite sick, is now recovering , he will remain at home until next October twelve months then go to the University. he is very studious indeed.." This is a very newsy letter covering sisters, cousins, local friends, John's possible engagement (and Fay's as well), Caroline's interest in religion and novels, etc. Condition of the letter is very good.
