Item Description
United States, Scott #1610, used(o), 1979, Americana Definitive Series, stamp shows a Rush Lamp and Candle Holder, "America's Light Fueled by Truth and Reason," the Americana Series was a series of definitive stamps issued between 1971 and 1985; the set contains no images of people or presidents; the stamps contain patriotic words on two adjacent sides inscribed within a curve; the center images on the stamp follow a theme; the stamps were issued on sheets which when detached and assembled in blocks of four, with different ascending values, such that the block of four with the wording would frame the block; the theme for this fifth block (values: 50¢-$5), for which this stamp is in the second $1 position, top right with printing across the top and down the right side, is 'Shining Light', hence the rush lamp and candle holder and the words on the subject of light; a rushlight is a type of candle or miniature torch formed by soaking the dried pith of the rush plant in fat or grease; rushlights were a common source of evening light for poor people, especially in the early American colonies; they were extremely inexpensive to make, but could be easily upgraded to hold a candle as on this stamp; $1 dollar, engraved and lithography printed by the ‘Bureau’ {Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BSP)}, perforated: 11, brown and orange yellow on tan paper, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered (very fine), double strike cancels, the main, a black-inked, single rim showing, quarter circular, socked-on-the-nose corner cancel at the top left and well clear of the main image, the second, a stray, black-inked cancel mark on the lower left corner perforations, stamp has a small tear at the middle right border, not noticeable to the eye, but there nevertheless, and hence stamp is price discounted, sound back, stamp appears to have a clipped perforation at the upper right corner, however this is a common illusion for the issue due to the asynchronized nature of the line perforation method used for this issue, the corner perforations on this stamp are sound, as are all the other perforations; centering and image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium, but tear calls for an adjustment, so a wash. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
