Item Description
The great PACIFIC 97 international stamp exhibition in San Francisco welcomed the postal authorities of over 40 different countries to the 'City by the Bay' in 1997.One of those international postal services was Greenland, with a nice booth and a handsome Pacific 97 hand cancel that was exclusively applied to their own Greenlandic stamps. This cover bears a 1963 stamp showing Greenland's National Animal, the Polar Bear, on a green 10 kronur single. It was very cleanly struck - in person - with the Greenland-Pacific97 cancel that was available at their booth.
The handcolored cachet shows a California Bear and Pelican welcoming a Greenlandic Polar Bear to the Golden State. He apparently plans to do some surfing while he's there, and has brought along his own surfboard decorated with a Greenland Flag motif.
The reverse carries the Puffin Cachets logo and shows that this is cover #5 of only 10 made.
