Item Description
One of the Faroes Islands' greatest sculptors and illustrators, Janus Kamban (1913-2009), was celebrated with a set of 3 stamps in 1996 that showed a trio of his paintings with distinctly Faroes subjects.The middle value of the three was this stylized painting of Faroese sheep and their young in a field. The handcolored cachet shows the black and brown Faroese sheep making friends with a Puffin visiting from the nearby seacliffs!
This FDC bears a pair of the new stamps and received two nice strikes of the official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of September 16, 1996 from the capital of Tórshavn. The reverse has the PUFFIN CACHETS logo and the designation that this is cover #1 of only 9 made.
