Have you ever seen a PIKA?! I saw my first one in Wyoming last Fall and it was bigger than I had expected! I was envisioning a hamster-sized little thing, but it turned out to be closer in size to a rabbit, to which they are related, and much furrier! Two Pika stamps grace this pop-up cover for the Alpine Tundra issue.The 'NATURE OF AMERICA' series of U.S. minisheets comprised a beautiful and fascinating array of overall design sheetlets with 10 separate animal stamps woven into each image. Only a few cachetmakers attempted to display all 10 species in their FDC designs.
Cartoonist and Cachetmaker Dave Bennett was a member of this brave but foolish minority! :o) Represented in his Pop-Up cachet are all 10 of the critters shown on the 'Alpine Tundra' sheetlet - the 9th one in the 12-pane 'NATURE OF AMERICA' series.
This one-of-a-kind cover (the only one serviced this way) highlights the Pika, bearing the Alpine Tundra single as well as the Pika single from the North American Wildlife sheet of 50 from 1987. The covers fit a normal FDC sleeve when folded, but opens up to a full 11"! The Pika is right there on the front of the cover!
