Historical note: the pietersburg club was a traditionally minded british gentlemen's club in southern africa founded in 1902 by major wilford nash bolton, who was provost marshall of the northern transvaal from 1901 until the end of the boer war and was also the prosecutor at the breaker morant trial.
The second boer war, which began in 1899 and lasted until may 31, 1902, and was fought between the british empire from southern africa, the cape colony, and the colony of natal on the southern tip of africa against the two boer states, the south african republic (also known as the republic of transvaal) and the orange free state.
The latter were ruled by the white, racially repressive descendants of dutch settlers who had evolved their own sense of national identity and resisted british encroachment in the region. The boers struck first and were at first surprisingly effective in spite of their small numbers. After their forces were initially defeated in the field, they progressed to a highly effective and bloody form of guerrilla warfare.
In retaliation, the british took extreme measures such as interning boer civilians, who were presumed to be supporting the guerrillas, in concentration camps, where many died of disease and malnutrition. Far worse atrocities were also committed, although not usually with official sanction.
In fact, harry "breaker" harbord morant, an anglo-australian lieutenant in a mounted unit of the british army during the war, was court-martialed for war crimes in the form of revenge killings in response to the death of his commanding officers. He was accused and convicted of the summary executions of a boer prisoner of war as well as several civilians.
He was convicted and sentenced to death, but has been figuratively resurrected in australia, where he and another officer who was also executed have been turned into folk heroes who, legend has it, were scapegoated and judicially murdered, although this partially aligns with the common view in southern africa that they were far from the only guilty parties.
The boers surrendered in 1902, and the british went on to co-opt their leadership when establishing their own rule in the region. The pietersburg club, founded after the war, was a gathering place for the colonial administrators who governed pietersburg and its development through most of the first half of the twentieth century.
It currently operates as a restaurant and hotel. For details, see: pietersburgclub.Co.Za/history-of-the-club/ and wikipedia/wiki/second_boer_war and wikipedia/wiki/breaker_morant; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
