TRANSVAAL ST HELENA BOER WAR TYPE 2a BRITISH SEAL REGISTERED CENSORED COVER 1901 TRANSVAAL ST HELENA BOER WAR TYPE 2a BRITISH SEAL REGISTERED CENSORED COVER 1901 Click images to enlarge Description TRANSVAAL Scott #203 (x2) & 207 stamps tied by April 18, 1901 Krugersdorp, Z.A.R. (Transvaal, South Africa) cds on registered censored cover sent to a Boer War POW interned at Dead Wood Camp, St. Helena. P.B.C. Krugersdorp magenta oval censor handstamp and faint double circle 'Censor Prisoners of War' violet handstamp type 1 marking at bottom left center. The type 2a seal used as a censor must have been applied in St. Helena with censor's initials'EW' in pencil on seal. E. Walton was a well known censor at Dead Wood Camp. (Queen Victoria Type 2a Crown 2 'Found Open and Officially Sealed.', Perf 11 3/4 Imprint "M -No. 11." at UR EKU 5/16/1890) The only reported use of any Victorian seal outside of Great Britain according to exhibitor. Sent 1901, beautiful as is condition. (Seals by definition were used to repair damaged mail caused by a wide variety of conditions and found in a wide range of condition.) This cover appeared in the exhibit of the late Jim Kotanchik's Gold Medal award winning exhibit, "Official Seals of Great Britain" The exhibit was probably last shown at Westpex in 2009. It is possible that some of the information contained therein is no longer current. Jim Kotanchik was a highly regarded expert in worldwide seals.
