Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1013 (Used, Previously Hinged – Single Stamp)3¢ Bright Blue – Women in Our Armed Services, 1952
(Commemorative Issue – Rotary Press Printing, Perf. 11x10½, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #1013 was issued on September 11, 1952, to honor women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The design depicts four uniformed women representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, with the U.S. Capitol building in the background. The inscriptions read “WOMEN IN OUR ARMED SERVICES” at the top and “UNITED STATES POSTAGE 3¢ OF AMERICA” along the bottom scroll. The issue was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on the rotary press, perforated 11x10½, and issued without watermark. The submitted example is postally used, previously hinged, and retains partial original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 76 (Fine/Very Fine)
The design is well clear of the perforations, though one or two margins are narrow. The bottom margin is the narrowest, the top margin the widest, and the left margin is slightly narrower than the right. Overall balance meets the Fine/Very Fine classification under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Evaluation:
Minor Fault: Several ragged, fuzzy, or shorter perforations, about half normal length
According to the PSE Soundness Table, this constitutes a Minor Fault, resulting in a deduction of approximately 20 points.
Soundness Classification: Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –20
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations measure 11x10½, as standard for the issue. Several perforations, especially along the lower edge, appear uneven or shortened but remain intact. There are no signs of reperforation or trimming. The stamp’s margins are full, with the bottom slightly narrow and the right margin broader than the left.
Cancellation Evaluation:
A black wavy-line machine cancel runs horizontally across the design, covering the central figures and the Capitol dome. It is moderately heavy but leaves the overall image discernible. Under PSE standards, this qualifies as a Heavy cancel and warrants a deduction of 10 points.
Cancellation Classification: Heavy Cancel
Cancellation Deduction: –10
Collector’s Note:
This issue holds enduring popularity for its patriotic and social significance, celebrating the contributions of women in uniform. Though the cancel and perforation roughness reduce its technical grade, the stamp retains good color and legibility. The hinged condition further impacts value but not its collectible merit as an authentic 1950s commemorative.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color and impression are strong, with uniform ink distribution. The heavy cancel detracts from overall visual harmony, and the hinging mark is visible on the reverse.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 76 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 56
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10 (Heavy cancel)
Final Grade: 46 (Good/Very Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1013
Condition: Used, Previously Hinged, Original Gum (partially remaining)
Centering: 76 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (ragged, fuzzy, or shorter perforations, –20)
Perforations: 11x10½, uneven but intact
Cancellation: Heavy machine cancel, wavy-line type (–10)
Eye Appeal: –10 adjustment for cancel and hinge trace
Final Grade: 46 (Good/Very Good)
Summary:
This used, previously hinged example of Scott #1013 is graded 46 (Good/Very Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. It displays Fine/Very Fine centering with clear margins but is impacted by rough perforations, a heavy machine cancel, and evidence of hinging on the reverse. Despite these issues, the stamp retains full design clarity and good color, making it a collectible and historically meaningful representation of the Women in Our Armed Services commemorative.
