Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1016 (Used, Previously Hinged – Single Stamp)3¢ Blue and Red – Honoring the International Red Cross, 1952
(Commemorative Issue – Rotary Press Printing, Perf. 11x10½, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Issued May 8, 1952, Scott #1016 honors the founding of the International Red Cross in 1864. The design features a globe showing the Western Hemisphere and a bright red cross radiating light, symbolizing worldwide humanitarian aid. Olive branches at the corners represent peace, and inscriptions read “HONORING THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS – FOUNDED 1864.” Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing via rotary press, this issue is perforated 11x10½ and unwatermarked. The submitted example is postally used, previously hinged, and retains partial original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Margins are full but uneven. The right margin is narrowest, the left widest, and the bottom slightly narrower than the top. The design remains clear of perforations, consistent with Fine/Very Fine centering.
Soundness Evaluation:
Minor Fault: Light crease
Per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, a light crease qualifies as a Minor Fault, resulting in a 20-point deduction.
Soundness Classification: Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –20
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations gauge 11x10½, standard for this issue. All are intact though slightly uneven, with no trimming or reperforation. The margins show natural rotary press irregularity but remain clear and proportional.
Cancellation Evaluation:
A black machine cancel runs horizontally in four wavy lines, crossing the red cross and part of the globe. It is heavy but leaves the major design visible. Classified as a Heavy cancel under PSE definitions.
Cancellation Deduction: –10
Collector’s Note:
The Red Cross commemorative remains highly regarded for its universal theme of compassion and peace. Despite a light crease and heavy cancel, this example maintains strong color and legibility, making it a desirable used specimen for humanitarian and mid-century commemorative collections.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp retains bright color and sharp contrast. The cancel detracts slightly from visual balance, but presentation remains acceptable.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 57
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10 (Heavy Cancel)
Final Grade: 47 (Good/Very Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1016
Condition: Used, Previously Hinged, Original Gum (partial)
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (light crease, –20)
Perforations: 11x10½, intact, slightly uneven
Cancellation: Heavy machine cancel, horizontal wavy lines (–10)
Eye Appeal: –10 adjustment for cancel visibility
Final Grade: 47 (Good/Very Good)
Summary:
This used, previously hinged example of Scott #1016 grades 47 (Good/Very Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. It shows Fine/Very Fine centering and bright color but is affected by a light crease and heavy machine cancel. Despite these flaws, the stamp remains visually balanced, historically meaningful, and a collectible representation of the 1952 International Red Cross commemorative.
