Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1100 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)3¢ Green – Gardening and Horticulture, 1958
(American Gardens Issue – Rotary Press Printing, Perf 11, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Issued in 1958, this 3¢ commemorative celebrates American gardening and horticulture. Designed by Ervine Metzl and engraved by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, it shows a classical female figure symbolizing abundance, holding a cornucopia overflowing with flowers and produce. “GARDENING” appears above, “HORTICULTURE” down the right, and “U.S. POSTAGE 3¢” below. Printed in deep green by rotary press, this example is unused, never hinged, and retains full original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
The image is slightly high and left, with the bottom margin narrowest and the left widest. All perforations are clear of the design with balanced white margins. The stamp meets the PSE definition of Fine/Very Fine centering—one or two sides narrower but the framelines fully clear.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp is structurally sound with full gum, no thins or repairs. It shows a single perf-tip crease on the lower edge and a faint natural gum bend on the reverse. Per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, this combination constitutes a Very Minor Fault.
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –7 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides, clean and intact with no sign of trimming or reperforation. One lower tip shows slight compression corresponding to the noted crease. Top and right margins are narrower, left and bottom more open, consistent with Fine/Very Fine centering.
Cancellation Evaluation:
Not applicable. The stamp is unused and free of cancellation.
Collector’s Note:
Never hinged Gardening and Horticulture issues with full gum and strong color are popular among mid-century U.S. commemorative collectors. Natural gum bends are common for this period and do not reduce visual appeal when gum is otherwise clean and glossy.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color is rich, impression sharp, and paper bright. Gum is even and lustrous with no oxidation or discoloration. The overall appearance is fresh and well balanced, requiring no modification of grade.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: ±0
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –7 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Eye Appeal Adjustment: ±0
Final Grade: 72 (Fine)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1100
Condition: Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (Perf-tip crease, minor gum bend)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact and genuine
Cancellation: None
Eye Appeal: Neutral; clean impression and fresh gum
Final Grade: 72 (Fine)
Summary:
This unused, never hinged Gardening and Horticulture commemorative shows Fine/Very Fine centering, vivid color, and intact perforations. A light perf-tip crease and minor gum bend produce a Very Minor Fault deduction, resulting in a final numerical grade of 72 (Fine). It remains an attractive, collectible 1950s commemorative, fully conforming to PSE 2009 grading standards.
