Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1118 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)8¢ Multicolor – Lajos Kossuth, Champion of Liberty Series, 1958
(Commemorative Issue – Engraved & Typography, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #1118 was issued in 1958 as part of the Champion of Liberty Series, honoring Lajos Kossuth, the Hungarian statesman instrumental in the 1848–1849 revolution. The design features a gold-toned engraved medallion portrait flanked by the dates “1848” and “1849,” with a stylized liberty torch and red-and-blue ribbon elements crowning the top. “CHAMPION OF LIBERTY” sits prominently above the portrait, the denomination “8¢” appears at lower right, and “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” anchors the lower border.
The submitted example is unused, never hinged, with full original gum. The printing remains crisp and the color bright.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
The bottom margin is the narrowest, the right margin the widest, and the top and left margins are equal. All four margins remain fully clear of the design, meeting the PSE definition of Fine/Very Fine: visually full margins with moderate imbalance on one or two sides.
