Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #335 (Used, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)5¢ Blue – George Washington, 1908
(U.S. Washington-Franklin Issue – Perf 12, Double-line Watermark)
?️ Design Overview:
Scott #335 is part of the Washington-Franklin series introduced in 1908. The stamp features a profile portrait of George Washington framed by laurel leaves, with "U.S. POSTAGE" inscribed at the top. It was printed in deep blue ink with a double-line watermark and perforated 12.
This example bears a black machine cancel positioned left of center. The cancel does not obscure Washington’s profile and allows most of the portrait’s detail to remain clearly visible. There is also a faint blue ink transfer visible on the back.
? Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 71 (Fine)
Perforations are quite close to the design on the right and bottom, yet still maintain a visible white margin.
Meets the PSE standard for Fine centering (71).
Soundness: Minor Fault (-25 deduction)
Three soundness issues observed:
Very Minor Fault: One shorter to short perf (less than half normal length).
Very Minor Fault: Perf tip crease.
Very Minor Fault: Light ink transfer on the back.
Under 2009 PSE guidelines, this combination qualifies as a Minor Fault, warranting a -25 point deduction.
✂️ Perforations & Margins:
Perforations are full but irregular on the left side, with one notably short perf at the bottom.
Margins are adequate for Fine centering, with no perforations cutting into the design.
? Cancellation Classification:
A machine-style cancel in black, largely confined to the left and bottom areas.
Most of the portrait and denomination remain unobstructed.
This qualifies as a Neat / Clean Cancel, which receives no adjustment under the eye appeal guidelines.
?️ Eye Appeal Evaluation:

Perforations One short perf; rest full and clean
Cancellation Neat machine cancel (no deduction or bonus)

Final Grade 46 (Good–Very Good – G-VG)
? Final Verdict:
This Scott #335 shows Fine centering and decent perforations, but a combination of three very minor faults reduces the grade. The clean machine cancel maintains the design’s visibility, resulting in no eye appeal penalty or bonus. With a total deduction of 25 points, the final grade is 46 (Good–Very Good – G-VG).
