Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #347 (Unused, Hinged – Pair)5¢ Blue – George Washington, 1909
(Washington-Franklin Series – Engraved, Imperforate)
Design Overview:
Scott #347 is the imperforate 5-cent Washington of the early Washington-Franklin series. Each stamp shows a left-facing portrait of George Washington within a laurel-wreath oval, “U.S. POSTAGE” in the top tablet, and “5 CENTS 5” in a bold lower tablet. This example is an unused horizontal pair with original gum and evidence of previous hinging.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
The outside margins of the pair are clear of the design on all sides, though unbalanced. The top margin is the most narrow and the left is the least narrow. The bottom margin is more narrow than the right. The spacing between the two stamps is normal for the issue.
Soundness Evaluation:
Minor Fault. A small corner crease is present, classified as a Minor Fault. A hinge remnant is visible on the reverse, a Very Minor Fault. Pencil writing on the back is an Extremely Minor Fault. In combination these constitute the Minor Fault soundness tier.
Perforations and Margins:
As issued, this is an imperforate multiple. All four outside margins are intact with no evidence of trimming. Cuts appear straight and original.
Cancellation Evaluation:
Not applicable (unused).
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color and impression are strong. Despite the unbalanced top margin and the small crease noted on the back, the face remains attractive. No eye-appeal adjustment is applied.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 59
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 347
Format: Unused horizontal pair, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: Fine/Very Fine 79; top narrowest, left widest; bottom narrower than right
Soundness: Minor Fault overall (small corner crease) with Very Minor and Extremely Minor faults noted (hinge remnant, pencil on reverse)
Perforations: Imperforate; full margins, no trimming evident
Cancellation: None (unused)
Eye Appeal: Strong color and impression; no adjustment
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good)
Final Verdict:
An attractive imperforate 5¢ Washington pair with Fine/Very Fine centering but reduced by a small corner crease and handling marks on the reverse. The result is a Very Good 59 under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
