Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #372 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)2¢ Carmine – Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909
(U.S. Commemorative Issue – Perf 12, Double-Line Watermark)
Design Overview:
Scott #372 was issued in 1909 to commemorate the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, honoring Henry Hudson’s 1609 exploration of the Hudson River and Robert Fulton’s early 19th-century steamboat navigation. The design features a maritime scene with Hudson’s sailing ship, the Half Moon, and Fulton’s steamboat, the Clermont, symbolizing the progression from sail to steam. The top inscription reads “HUDSON-FULTON CELEBRATION,” and the denomination “TWO CENTS” is displayed at the bottom.
This example is postally used, previously hinged, and has no original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine – F/VF)
Perforations are clear of the design on all sides, with one or two slightly narrow margins. The frame lines remain fully intact, meeting the PSE standard for Fine/Very Fine centering. No side of the design touches or is cut by the perforations.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp exhibits multiple faults:
Major Fault: Several faulty, clipped, pulled, or short perforations.
Fault: Small thin measuring approximately 1–4 mm.
Very Minor Fault: Hinge mark or hinge remnant visible on the reverse.
Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, the presence of a major fault results in a –45 point deduction from the centering grade.
Perforations and Margins:
Several perforations are damaged, with visible clipping, pulling, and shortening. Margins meet Fine/Very Fine standards in size but are compromised by the perforation damage.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The design remains clear enough for identification, but the cancellation is heavy, with multiple dark lines obscuring part of the vignette. In combination with the damaged perforations, this warrants a –10 point adjustment for reduced visual appeal.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –45 (Major Fault + Fault + Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 33
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10 (Heavy Cancel)
Final Grade: 23 (Fair/Good – FR/G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 372
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Major Fault (several faulty, clipped, pulled, or short perforations), Fault (small thin), Very Minor Fault (hinge mark)
Perforations: Damaged, with multiple clipped, short, or pulled tips
Cancellation: Heavy cancel, obscuring parts of the design
Eye Appeal: –10 point deduction due to heavy cancel and perforation damage
Final Grade: 23 (Fair/Good – FR/G)
Final Verdict:
This used, hinged example of Scott #372 retains Fine/Very Fine centering but suffers from substantial condition issues, including multiple damaged perforations, a small thin, and a hinge mark. The heavy cancellation further reduces its eye appeal. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, the final numerical grade is 23 (Fair/Good – FR/G). While collectible for completion purposes, the condition significantly impacts its market desirability.
