Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #405 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – George Washington, 1912
(Washington-Franklin Issue – Engraved, Perf 12, Single-line Watermark)
Design Overview:
Scott #405 presents a left-facing portrait of George Washington within a laurel-wreath oval. “U.S. POSTAGE” appears in the top tablet and “ONE CENT” in the lower tablet with numeral ornaments at the corners. Printed in green by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, this value commonly paid the postcard rate.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 55 (Very Good)
Perforations touch or appear to touch the frameline at the top, with the right margin also quite tight. The bottom margin is the most generous and the left is wider than the right, producing an up-and-right shift consistent with Very Good centering.
Soundness Evaluation:
Minor Fault. The reverse shows a hinge remnant and light ink transfer (offset), each classified as Very Minor Faults; in combination they place the stamp in the Minor Fault soundness tier. No tears, thins, or creases are evident from the images.
Perforations and Margins:
Gauge 12 perforations are genuine with complete teeth and no signs of reperforation. Margin balance matches the centering description: top narrowest, bottom widest; right narrower than left.
Cancellation Evaluation:
Not applicable (unused).
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color and impression are fresh; the reverse offset does not show through to the front. No adjustment applied.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 55 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 35
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 35 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 405
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: Very Good 55; top narrowest, bottom widest; right narrower than left
Soundness: Minor Fault overall (hinge remnant, light ink transfer on back)
Perforations: Perf 12 genuine and intact
Cancellation: None (unused)
Eye Appeal: Fresh color and clear impression; no deduction
Final Grade: 35 (Good)
Final Verdict:
A presentable 1¢ Washington with fresh color but tight top and right margins. Minor handling evidence on the reverse places it in the Minor Fault tier, yielding a final grade of Good 35 under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
