Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #568 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)25¢ Green – Niagara Falls, 1923
(Regular Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11, No Watermark)
Design Overview:
Scott #568 is a 25¢ green engraved stamp issued in 1923 as part of the Fourth Bureau Issue. The design features a scenic view of Niagara Falls, framed in an ornate rectangular border with arched text at the top reading “UNITED STATES POSTAGE.” The denomination “25 CENTS” appears in numerals at the lower corners. The stamp was printed using flat plate methods and perforated 11 on all four sides.
This example is used, previously hinged, and lacks original gum. A circular date stamp cancel is present across the waterfall, and the reverse shows a hinge remnant, light ink transfer, and two minor creases.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
The stamp’s design is well clear of the perforation holes on all sides, though margin widths are slightly uneven. The left margin is the most narrow, followed by the right. The top is wider, and the bottom is the broadest. All margins maintain the minimum spacing for Fine/Very Fine centering, with no encroachment into the design. This earns a centering grade of 77 under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Evaluation:
The following faults are present:
Very Minor Fault: Corner perforation crease
Very Minor Fault: Perforation tip crease
Very Minor Fault: Hinge remnant
Very Minor Fault: Light ink transfer on back
According to the PSE Guide, three or more very minor faults qualify as a Minor Fault.
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is perforated 11 on all four sides, consistent with the issue. All perforations are intact and evenly spaced, with no evidence of trimming or reperforation. The corner and tip creases do not disrupt the integrity of the perforation teeth.
Cancellation Classification:
The cancellation is a moderately light black circular date stamp. While it crosses the center of the design, it remains faint enough not to obscure the details of the image, particularly the central falls and surrounding scenery.
Cancellation Classification: Light to Moderate
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 57
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 57 (Very Good – VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 568
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (hinge remnant, corner perf crease, perf tip crease, ink transfer)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact and original
Cancellation: Light to moderate circular date stamp
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 57 (Very Good – VG)
Final Verdict:
This used Scott #568 exhibits well-balanced centering and strong visual presentation. However, multiple very minor physical faults reduce the grade to a 57 (Very Good) per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. Despite the downgrade, the stamp remains an attractive and collectible example of this high-value Fourth Bureau Issue.
