Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #569 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)30¢ Olive Brown – American Bison, 1923
(Flat Plate Printing – Fourth Bureau Issue, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #569 is a 30¢ olive brown engraved stamp issued in 1923 as part of the Fourth Bureau Issue. It features a dramatic profile of an American Bison standing on open plains, enclosed in an arched frame with ornamental scrollwork. The words “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” are printed at the top, with “30 CENTS 30” at the lower corners. This issue was flat-plate printed and perforated gauge 11 on all sides.
The submitted example is postally used, previously hinged, and has no original gum. It presents fairly well from the front, with a light cancel and decent framing, but exhibits several faults on the reverse.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 57 (Very Good)
The stamp’s centering is noticeably off. The top perforations come very close to, or just slightly into, the upper edge of the design. The right side is also narrow, while the bottom margin is the most generous. The left side is slightly broader than the right. Under PSE standards, this qualifies as Very Good centering, where the design is close to or touched by the perforation holes.
Soundness Evaluation:
Several Faults Are Present:
Major Fault: Large thin in the upper left portion of the reverse
Minor Fault: Patchy partial gum
Very Minor Fault: Hinge remnant
Extremely Minor Fault: Pencil writing on the back
This combination qualifies for the Major Fault classification under the PSE grading table.
Soundness Deduction: –40 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides, consistent with the issue. The perforation teeth are mostly intact, though slightly uneven at corners. There is no evidence of reperforation or trimming.
Cancellation Classification:
A faint black circular date stamp cancel crosses the vignette diagonally, from top left to bottom right, passing across the bison’s head and shoulders. The cancel is lightly applied and does not interfere with the visibility of the design, qualifying it for a +5 point bonus for unobtrusive cancellation under the 2009 PSE Eye Appeal scale.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: +5 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 57 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –40 (Major Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 17
Eye Appeal Bonus: +5 (Light cancel)
Final Grade: 22 (Fair/Good – F/G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 569
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Gum
Centering: 57 (Very Good)
Soundness: Major Fault (large thin, partial gum, hinge remnant, pencil writing)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact
Cancellation: Light CDS, does not obscure central vignette
Eye Appeal: +5 bonus
Final Grade: 22 (Fair/Good – F/G)
Final Verdict:
This example of Scott #569 maintains decent visual integrity from the front, aided by a clean and light cancel. However, the presence of a major thin and other back faults significantly reduce the grade. Despite this, it retains a collectible presence, earning a final grade of 22 (Fair/Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
