Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #571 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)$1.00 Violet Brown – Lincoln Memorial, 1922
(Fourth Bureau Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #571 features a finely engraved view of the Lincoln Memorial, depicted in classical perspective with the central inscription “LINCOLN MEMORIAL” in a curved cartouche below the image. “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” spans the arching top, and the denomination “1 DOLLAR 1” anchors the corners and bottom of the frame. Issued as part of the Fourth Bureau Issue of 1922–25, this high-value definitive was printed via flat plate printing, perforated 11, and on unwatermarked paper.
The submitted example is postally used, shows evidence of previous hinging, and no longer retains original gum. While the design remains strong and well-preserved, the stamp suffers from several condition faults and uneven margins.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
The stamp has visibly uneven margins. The top margin is the most constricted, the left is also narrow, while the bottom is more generous and the right margin is the widest. However, the design remains well clear of all perforation holes, meeting the PSE threshold for Fine/Very Fine centering. The overall impression is slightly unbalanced but within acceptable bounds for this grade range.
Soundness Evaluation:
This stamp presents a combination of minor and very minor faults:
Multiple perforation tip creases (Minor Fault)
Partial gum (Minor Fault – treated as a soundness issue per PSE guidelines)
Hinge remnant (Very Minor Fault)
Pencil writing on reverse (Extremely Minor Fault)
According to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, a combination of two minor faults and additional very minor/extremely minor faults constitutes a general Fault category.
Soundness Classification: Fault
Soundness Deduction: –30 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is perforated 11 as expected for this issue. Several perforation tips show visible creasing, though none are torn or missing. No signs of trimming or reperforation are present. The margins are narrow and unbalanced, particularly along the top and left edges.
Cancellation Classification:
A black circular cancel crosses the stamp diagonally, with curved segments passing through the right and lower corners. The design remains legible and unobscured. Based on PSE guidelines, this cancel qualifies as Neat/Clean, and does not merit any adjustment to the grade.
Cancellation Classification: Neat/Clean Cancel
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –30 (Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 47
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 47 (Good/Very Good – G/VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 571
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Fault (perf tip creases, partial gum, hinge remnant, pencil mark)
Perforations: Perf 11, creased but complete
Cancellation: Neat/Clean, non-obscuring
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 47 (Good/Very Good – G/VG)
Final Verdict:
This used example of Scott #571 shows Fine/Very Fine centering but is impacted by multiple minor and very minor condition faults, including perf tip creases and hinge remnants. Though visually intact and legible, the combination of faults lowers the final numerical grade to 47 (Good/Very Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
