Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #582 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)1½¢ Yellow Brown – Warren G. Harding, 1923
(Series of 1922–1925 – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 10, Single-Line Watermark)
Design Overview:
Scott #582 is a 1½¢ yellow brown definitive stamp from the 1922–1925 Regular Issue series. It features a left-facing portrait of President Warren G. Harding framed by an oval and surrounded by ornate scrollwork. The inscription “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” appears at the top, and “1½ CENTS” is at the bottom. This issue was printed using the flat plate method on single-line watermarked paper and perforated 10 on all four sides, which differentiates it from later versions with different gauges or printing methods.
The submitted example is postally used, has been hinged, and no longer retains original gum. It exhibits multiple faults affecting its soundness.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 53 (Very Good)
The perforations come very close to the design, especially at the top and right sides, where they appear to touch or nearly touch the frameline. The left and bottom margins are wider, with the bottom being the most generous. These characteristics place the stamp in the Very Good centering range, as defined by the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Evaluation:
This stamp has a small thin (approximately 1–4 mm), which is considered a full Fault. It also shows a hinge remnant and a corner perforation crease, each classified as Very Minor Faults, along with pencil writing on the reverse, which is an Extremely Minor Fault. The presence of one fault along with two very minor and one extremely minor fault supports a Fault classification overall.
Soundness Classification: Fault
Soundness Deduction: –30 points
Perforations and Margins:
This stamp is perforated 10 on all sides as expected. While the perforations are complete and generally intact, the lower left corner exhibits a small crease. There is no evidence of reperforation or trimming.
Cancellation Classification:
There is no visible cancellation on the front of the stamp, or if present, it is extremely light and does not obscure any design features. As such, no adjustment is applied for cancellation.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 53 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –30
Adjusted Base Grade: 23
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 23 (Fair/Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 582
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Gum
Centering: 53 (Very Good)
Soundness: Fault (small thin, hinge remnant, corner perf crease, pencil writing)
Perforations: Perf 10, complete with a creased corner tip
Cancellation: None or extremely faint, no visual impact
Final Grade: 23 (Fair/Good)
Final Verdict:
This used, hinged example of Scott #582 exhibits Very Good centering but is impacted by a small thin and several additional back faults. While the front remains intact and free from a heavy cancellation, the condition issues lower the final grade to 23 (Fair/Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
