Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #587 (Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum - Single Stamp)Design Overview
Scott #587 is a 6-cent James A. Garfield definitive stamp issued in 1923 as part of the Fourth Bureau Issue. The stamp features a right-facing engraved portrait of President Garfield, enclosed in an oval frame, with “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” at the top and “6 CENTS” at the bottom corners. This stamp was printed on a flat plate press and is perforated 11.
This example is used, has no original gum, and has never been hinged (NH).
Grading Breakdown
Centering Grade: Fine (70)
✔ The stamp’s design is slightly off-center, with the perforation holes coming very close to the design—particularly on the right side.
✔ White space is still clearly visible to the unaided eye (at least 0.2mm), which qualifies it for a Fine centering grade.
? Assigned Centering Grade: 70 (Fine - F)
Soundness Evaluation
✘ This stamp has a small (~1 mm) tear, which constitutes a Fault under the PSE grading guide.
✔ There are no additional thins, creases, or major structural issues beyond the tear.
✔ Perforations appear generally intact aside from the tear.
? Soundness Classification: Fault
? Deduction Applied: –40 points
? Grade Before Eye Appeal Adjustment: 30 (Good - G)
Perforations & Margins
✔ Perforations are complete except at the site of the small tear.
✔ Margins are tight, especially on the right, but still meet the Fine definition.
Cancellation Classification
Cancellation Characteristics
A black machine cancel consisting of horizontal bars.
The cancel crosses the design, including Garfield’s face and the denomination.
It is medium in intensity, not fully obliterating the portrait.
? Classification: Heavy Cancel
? Eye Appeal Deduction: –10 points
Eye Appeal Evaluation
Aspect Assessment

Final Summary
Category Evaluation
Scott Number 587
Condition Used, Never Hinged, No Gum
Centering 70 (Fine - F)
Soundness Fault: Small Tear (–40)
Perforations Intact except for tear
Cancellation Heavy Cancel (–10), crosses design
Final Grade 20 (Fair-Good - FR-G)
? Final Verdict
This used, never hinged Scott #587 receives a final numerical grade of 20 (Fair-Good - FR-G). The combination of a small tear (–40) and a heavy cancel (–10) significantly reduces its collectible value. While still identifiable and complete, this stamp would be best classified as a low-grade space filler in a used U.S. definitive collection.
