Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #590 (Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum – Single Stamp)9¢ Rose – Thomas Jefferson, 1926
(Series of 1922–1925 – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #590 was issued in 1926 as part of the definitive Series of 1922–1925. It features a finely engraved portrait of Thomas Jefferson in a classical oval frame, flanked by ornate scrollwork. “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” appears in an arc at the top, with the denomination “9 CENTS” displayed prominently at the bottom corners. The name “JEFFERSON” is inscribed beneath the portrait. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, this issue is perforated 11 and produced on unwatermarked paper. The example submitted is unused, never hinged, and retains its full original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
The perforations touch or appear to touch the frameline of the design. The right margin is the narrowest, with perforations impinging slightly into the frameline. The left margin is also narrow, though not as severe, while the top margin is the widest and the bottom moderately wider than the left. This balance is consistent with the PSE definition of Very Good centering, with margins approximately 0.1 mm to –0.1 mm.
Soundness Evaluation:
This stamp exhibits one production-related issue: a minor natural gum bend, which qualifies as an Extremely Minor Fault under the 2009 PSE Guide.
Soundness Deduction: –10 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides, as expected for this issue. The perforations are intact and fully formed. Margins are uneven, with crowding at the right side, moderate narrowing at the left, and more generous spacing at the top and bottom.
Cancellation Evaluation:
Not applicable. This is an unused example.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp presents strong rose color and sharp impression. Paper is fresh, and gum is intact with only a slight natural bend. No adjustment is necessary beyond the soundness deduction.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 59 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –10 (Extremely Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 49
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 49 (Good–Very Good – G-VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 590
Condition: Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 59 (Very Good)
Soundness: Extremely Minor Fault (natural gum bend)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact, margins narrow at right and left
Cancellation: None (unused example)
Eye Appeal: Strong color and impression, no adjustment applied
Final Grade: 49 (Good–Very Good – G-VG)
Final Verdict:
This example of Scott #590 shows Very Good centering with a fresh appearance and strong rose color. The only detracting factor is a minor natural gum bend, classified as an Extremely Minor Fault. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, it earns a final grade of Good–Very Good (49 G-VG) and remains a solid collectible example of the Series of 1922–1925.
