Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #591 (Used, Never Hinged, No Gum – Single Stamp)Design Overview
Scott #591 is a 10-cent orange yellow stamp from the 1923 Fourth Bureau Issue, featuring a portrait of Daniel Webster, a prominent American statesman and orator. The portrait is framed in an ornate oval with denomination numerals “10” at the lower corners and the words “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” inscribed at the top. This stamp was printed using the flat plate printing process and perforated gauge 11.
This example is used, has no gum, and shows no evidence of hinging. The cancel is bold and heavily strikes the face of the stamp.
Grading Breakdown
Centering Grade: Good (30)
✔ The design is clearly off-center with the perforations cutting into the frameline, particularly at the top and left. ✔ Part of the design has been lost due to encroachment by the perforations, especially visible in the portrait area. ✔ White space is minimal and unevenly distributed, consistent with a Good centering grade per PSE guidelines.
Soundness Evaluation
✔ The stamp shows a Minor Fault: a light crease, visible especially under magnification or when backlit. ✔ No tears, thins, holes, or repairs are present. ✔ The back is generally sound aside from slight discoloration near the base, which does not affect grading.
? Adjusted Soundness Grade Deduction: -10 points (for the light crease).
✔ Final Grade Before Eye Appeal Adjustment: 20 (Fair/Good).
Perforations & Margins
✔ The perforation teeth are mostly intact, though a few tips are irregular due to the tight margins. ✔ All sides are complete, but the design is intruded upon by perforations. ✔ The top margin cuts into the oval frame above the head, and the left side nicks into the design, confirming the “Good” centering grade.
Eye Appeal Evaluation
✘ Cancellation Impact:
The black circular cancel is very heavy, fully obscuring the portrait and dominating the stamp's design.
This qualifies as a "Very Heavy Cancel", per PSE eye appeal adjustment guidelines.
? Eye Appeal Deduction: -15 points (due to very heavy cancel obscuring the central design).
Final Numerical Grade Calculation
Grading Component Score
Base Grade (Good Centering) 30
Soundness Deduction (Light Crease) -10
Eye Appeal Deduction (Very Heavy Cancel) -15
Final Numerical Grade 5 (Poor - P)
Final Summary
Category Evaluation
Scott Number 591
Condition Used, Never Hinged, No Gum
Centering 30 (Good - G)
Soundness Minor Fault (Light Crease - Deduction Applied)
Perforations Perforations cut well into design
Eye Appeal -15 for Very Heavy Cancel
Final Grade 5 (Poor - P)
? Final Verdict
This example of Scott #591 receives a final numerical grade of 5 (Poor) due to intrusive centering, a light crease, and a very heavy obliterating cancel. While it retains historical and catalog interest, its market appeal and value are significantly diminished due to its condition and cancellation impact.
