Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #597 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – Benjamin Franklin, 1923
(Flat Plate Printing – Coil Issue, Perf 10 Vertically, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #597 is a flat plate coil stamp issued in 1923 as part of the Series of 1922. It features a left-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin enclosed in a bordered oval frame. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” and “1 CENT” appear above and below the portrait, respectively. This stamp was designed for use in vending and affixing machines and is correctly perforated 10 vertically.
Centering
The stamp has solid Fine/Very Fine centering. All perforation holes are clearly clear of the design. The right margin is the most narrow, while the bottom is the widest. The left margin is narrower than the top. The overall balance and spacing yield a centering grade of 78.
Soundness
This example displays multiple small flaws. There is partial original gum present, which qualifies as a minor fault due to its uneven distribution. A hinge remnant is visible on the back. There is a small area of paper adhesion on the reverse. Additionally, one perforation is shorter than half normal length, and another appears fuzzy or ragged. This combination of one minor fault and multiple very minor to extremely minor faults classifies the stamp as having a fault under the PSE grading scale.
Perforations
Perforation 10 vertically is appropriate for this flat plate coil issue. Most perforations are intact, aside from the noted shorter and fuzzy ones. There is no evidence of trimming or alteration.
Eye Appeal
The stamp’s color is fresh and the design is well-struck. Despite the faults on the reverse, there is no visual detriment to the front. No eye appeal adjustment is made.
Cancellation
The stamp is unused and exhibits no cancellation marks.
