Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #614 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary, 1924
(Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #614 is a 1¢ green commemorative stamp issued in 1924 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Huguenot-Walloon settlement in New Netherland. The design features a detailed image of the ship Nieuw Nederland, under full sail, crossing the Atlantic. Above the ship is a curved “Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary” inscription flanked by “1624” and “1924” in decorative scrolls. The stamp is printed using the flat plate method and has gauge 11 perforations.
The submitted example is unused, previously hinged, and retains original gum. It presents strongly from the front, though with notable faults on the reverse and edges.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
The design is clear of the perforations on all four sides. The bottom margin is the narrowest, while the right margin is the widest. The overall balance meets the criteria for Fine/Very Fine centering according to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Evaluation:
This stamp exhibits multiple issues. The most severe is a large natural gum wrinkle that distorts the gum and causes visible disturbance on the back, constituting a heavy natural gum crease. Additionally, there are several perf tip creases, light smudging or soiling on the reverse, and a clear hinge remnant.
These faults—one major and two or more minor/very minor—qualify as a Major Fault under the PSE system.
Soundness Classification: Major Fault
Soundness Deduction: –45 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is correctly perforated 11 on all four sides. While the right edge is fully intact, several perf tips on the top and bottom edges are bent or lightly creased. There is no evidence of trimming, but the creases detract from structural integrity.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
From the front, the stamp has solid color and well-defined detail. However, the heavy gum crease and minor soiling on the back, though not visible from the front, still slightly detract from the perceived overall quality.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –1 point
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –45 (Major Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 32
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –1
Final Grade: 31 (Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 614
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Major Fault (heavy gum crease, perf tip creases, hinge remnant, light smudging)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact but creased in places
Eye Appeal: –1 adjustment for gum wrinkle and back condition
Final Grade: 31 (Good)
Final Verdict:
This unused example of Scott #614 has Fine/Very Fine centering but is substantially impacted by a heavy gum wrinkle and additional minor faults. These combine to yield a final grade of 31 (Good) per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. While visually appealing from the front, the back condition and structural compromises reduce its collectible value.
