Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #619 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)5¢ Blue – The Minute Man, 1925
(Lexington-Concord Issue – Engraved Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #619 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord and features an image of Daniel Chester French’s statue The Minute Man flanked by inscriptions of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Concord Hymn. The stamp is executed in deep blue and printed using the intaglio (engraved) process. The sides are bordered by rifles and drums to honor the revolutionary militia. It is perforated 11 and issued with original gum.
The submitted example is unused and previously hinged. It presents nicely from the front, with strong visual appeal and no major design disruptions.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
All four margins are clear of the design, with the top margin being the widest and the bottom the most narrow. While not perfectly balanced, the image is generally well-placed and comfortably fits the Fine/Very Fine category under PSE standards.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp exhibits two flaws on the reverse. A light ink transfer is visible, which qualifies as a very minor fault. There is also a hinge remnant present in the upper center, which also falls into the very minor category. The combination of these two faults meets the threshold for a "Minor Fault" designation.
Soundness Classification: Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations are complete and uniform, showing no signs of shortening, separation, or trimming. The spacing is consistent with Perf 11. Margin balance is acceptable for Fine/Very Fine, though slightly heavy at bottom.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
From the front, the stamp retains its original deep blue tone and crisp engraving. The faults are limited to the back and have no visible impact on front-facing presentation. No deduction or bonus is applied for eye appeal.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 59
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 619
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (hinge remnant, ink transfer on back)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact and regular
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
Final Verdict:
This unused hinged example of Scott #619 shows strong centering and attractive color typical of the Lexington-Concord commemorative issue. Though visually appealing from the front, minor flaws on the back result in a soundness deduction that brings the stamp’s final grade to 59 (Very Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
