Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #632 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – Benjamin Franklin, 1926
(Series of 1922 – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #632 features a left-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin enclosed in an ornate oval frame. “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” appears across the top, with “1 CENT 1” inscribed at the bottom. Issued as part of the Series of 1922, this stamp was flat plate printed on unwatermarked paper and perforated 11 on all sides. Franklin’s image was used for the 1¢ denomination across multiple definitive series, making this a familiar and widely circulated design.
This example is unused with full original gum and has been previously hinged. The impression is strong and color is rich, though the reverse reveals a subtle ink transfer.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
The stamp design is well clear of the perforation holes on all four sides, but the margins are unequal. The bottom margin is the most narrow, the top is the most generous, and the right margin is slightly wider than the left. These traits meet the criteria for a Fine/Very Fine centering classification under the 2009 PSE standards. Margins fall within the acceptable range for rotary press era regular issues.
Soundness Evaluation:
A faint ink transfer is visible on the back of the stamp, likely from stacked sheet contact during storage. There are no thins, tears, or missing perforations. This qualifies as a Very Minor Fault, per the PSE guidelines.
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –5 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all four sides, consistent with the issue. All perforations are clean and unaltered. No signs of reperforation or trimming. The bottom margin is slightly narrow but remains visibly clear of the design.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp has vibrant green color, excellent print clarity, and is free of staining or visual detractors from the front. The light ink offset on the back is not visually evident from the front. Thus, no eye appeal deduction or bonus is applied.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –5 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 72 (Fine – F)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 632
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (light ink transfer on back)
Perforations: Perf 11, full and genuine
Eye Appeal: No adjustment applied
Final Grade: 72 (Fine – F)
Final Verdict:
This hinged example of Scott #632 is an attractive and well-preserved Franklin 1¢ stamp with solid Fine/Very Fine centering and a single very minor flaw on the reverse. While the ink transfer prevents it from reaching higher grades, the stamp presents well from the front and earns a respectable final grade of 72 (Fine) per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
