Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #634 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)Design Overview
Scott #634 is a 2¢ carmine red stamp from the 1926–1934 Fourth Bureau Issue, featuring a left-facing portrait of George Washington framed in a decorative oval with “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” inscribed across the top. The denomination is clearly marked in numerals at the lower corners and in words at the bottom center. This issue was widely used and remains a staple of early 20th-century U.S. philately.
This particular stamp is unused with original gum and has been previously hinged.
Grading Breakdown
Centering Grade: Fine/Very Fine (77)
The design is well-positioned, and all perforation tips are well clear of the printed design.
Margins are slightly tighter on the left and top sides but remain within the acceptable range for Fine/Very Fine (F/VF).
There is adequate white space visible on all four sides, with no framelines close to or touching the perforations.
? Assigned Centering Grade: 77
Soundness Evaluation
One short perf (less than half the normal length) is noted along the top edge.
No thins, creases, tears, or stains are observed.
No discoloration or foreign markings appear on the back beyond a mild hinge remnant, which is evaluated separately.
? Soundness Category: Very Minor Fault
? Soundness Deduction: –5 points
? Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Perforations & Margins
Perforations are generally even and fully formed, except for one visibly shorter perf at the top.
Margins are balanced enough to support the F/VF centering grade, though slightly narrower on the left and top.
Eye Appeal Evaluation
Aspect Assessment
Color & Impression Strong carmine red; excellent clarity and bold print
Gum Condition Original gum, though disturbed by hinge mark
Overall Appearance Attractive appearance with a balanced frame
The shorter perf is subtle and not easily seen from a distance. No reduction for eye appeal is necessary based on current guidelines.
? Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points

Final Summary
Category Evaluation
Scott Number 634
Condition Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering 77 (Fine/Very Fine – F/VF)
Soundness Very Minor Fault (short perf)
Perforations Slightly uneven; 1 shorter perf
Eye Appeal Bold impression and color, no deduction
Final Grade 72 (Fine – F)
? Final Verdict
This is a strong Fine example of Scott #634 with Fine/Very Fine centering and one shorter perf that modestly reduces its overall score. The stamp retains original gum with hinging, and it presents well despite the minor imperfection. A visually appealing and collectible issue from the Washington-Franklin era.
