Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #634 (Used – Single Stamp)2¢ Carmine Red – George Washington, 1926
(Fourth Bureau Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #634 is a 2¢ carmine red George Washington stamp issued in 1926 as part of the Fourth Bureau Issue. It features a profile bust of George Washington encased in an ornamental frame, with the denomination and “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” clearly presented. This issue was mass-produced for widespread use and is one of the most recognizable Washington portrait issues of the 20th century.
The example submitted is used, bears a circular date stamp (CDS) cancel over the portrait, and has no gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
The design is well-centered with all perforations clear of the design. Margins are slightly narrow on the left and top but comfortably meet Fine/Very Fine criteria. No framelines are close to or touching the perforations.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp shows no creases, thins, or tears. All perforations are complete and evenly spaced. There are no natural or physical faults noted on either side.
Soundness Classification: Faultless
Soundness Deduction: 0 points
Adjusted Base Grade: 77
Perforations and Margins:
The perforations are fully intact and evenly punched. Margins are slightly tighter on the top and left than on the bottom and right but remain balanced and clear of the design.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp displays a rich, vibrant carmine red color with crisp detail. The black circular date stamp cancel is moderately dark and crosses Washington’s face, which slightly reduces visual appeal. Per the Eye Appeal Guidelines, a moderate cancel obscuring key features qualifies for a –7 point adjustment.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –7 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: 0 (Faultless)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –7 (heavy cancel)
Final Grade: 70 (Fine – F)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 634
Condition: Used, No Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Faultless
Perforations: Fully intact and evenly spaced
Eye Appeal: Heavy cancel over portrait (–7)
Final Grade: 70 (Fine – F)
Final Verdict:
This is a solid Fine example of Scott #634. While the centering is strong and the stamp is free from faults, the heavy cancel across Washington’s portrait brings the final numerical grade down to 70. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive and collectible used copy of this classic Washington issue.
