Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #641 (Used, Hinged, No Original Gum – Single Stamp)2¢ Carmine – Norse-American Issue, 1926
(Commemorative Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #641 was issued in 1926 as part of the Norse-American commemorative set celebrating the centennial of Norwegian immigration to the United States. The vignette depicts the ship Restaurationen, which carried the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to America in 1825. The design is framed with ornate scrolls, with “NORSE-AMERICAN CENTENNIAL” inscribed above and the denomination “TWO CENTS” at the base. This submitted example is used, has been hinged, and retains no original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 70 (Fine – F)
The stamp’s design comes very close to the perforations on both the bottom and right sides but maintains a small amount of white space visible to the eye. The top margin is the broadest, the bottom the narrowest, and the right side narrower than the left. This meets PSE’s definition of Fine centering.
Soundness Evaluation:
The following faults are present:
Minor Fault: Several perf creases
Extremely Minor Fault: Pencil writing on back of stamp
According to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, the combination of a Minor Fault with an additional extremely minor fault classifies the stamp overall as having a Minor Fault.
Soundness Deduction: –30 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all four sides, consistent with the issue. While complete, several perforation tips show creasing. Margins are uneven, with the bottom and right sides being the most narrow.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp bears a black machine cancel that extends across the vignette. While the cancel obscures portions of the ship and surrounding design, the denomination remains legible. Under PSE standards, this is a heavy cancel.
Collector’s Note:
Lighter strikes and circular date cancels are more desirable for this issue. Machine cancels across the design are common but reduce eye appeal.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –5
The heavy cancel and visible perf creases reduce visual quality, though the carmine color remains strong and the design impression is intact.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 70 (Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –30 (Minor Fault classification)
Adjusted Base Grade: 40 (Good/Very Good)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –5 (Heavy cancel and perf creases)
Final Grade: 35 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 641
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 70 (Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (perf creases, pencil writing on back)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact, with several creased tips
Cancellation: Heavy machine cancel across vignette
Eye Appeal: –5 deduction for cancel and crease impact
Final Grade: 35 (Good – G)
Final Verdict:
This example of Scott #641 displays Fine centering but is downgraded by perf creases, pencil writing on the back, and a heavy machine cancel. It grades as Good 35 under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, remaining a collectible but modest-quality representative of the Norse-American issue.
