Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #65 (Used, Hinged – Single Stamp)3¢ Rose – George Washington, 1861
(U.S. 1861 Issue – Engraved Printing, Perf 12)
Design Overview:
Scott #65 was issued in 1861 as part of the Civil War-era definitive series. The design features a left-facing portrait of George Washington enclosed in an intricate lathework frame. The denomination “3” appears in each upper corner, with “THREE CENTS” inscribed at the base. This example is used, hinged, and retains its original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 56 (Very Good)
The perforations come into contact with the design on multiple sides. The left margin is the narrowest and cuts very closely into the frameline. The top is also tight, while the right margin shows the greatest clearance. Margins fall into the Very Good range, where perforations touch or appear to touch the design.
Soundness Evaluation:
Fault: Pencil writing visible on the back.
Classification: Extremely Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –10 points (Very Good centering with Extremely Minor Faults = Good/Very Good range).
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations are intact but uneven, with several tips short and irregular. The left and top edges are the most narrow, while the bottom and right provide slightly more space. There is no evidence of reperforation.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The black cancel is heavy, obscuring much of Washington’s face and lower vignette. Under PSE guidelines, this qualifies as a Heavy Cancel.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 56 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –10 (Extremely Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 46 (Good/Very Good)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –10 (Heavy Cancel)
Final Grade: 36 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 65
Condition: Used, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: Very Good (56)
Soundness: Extremely Minor Fault (pencil writing on back)
Perforations: Uneven, several short and irregular, left and top narrowest
Cancellation: Heavy black cancel obscuring portrait (–10 adjustment)
Eye Appeal: –10 due to cancellation coverage
Final Grade: 36 (Good – G)
Final Verdict:
This example of Scott #65 shows Very Good centering with margins that touch or nearly cut the design. An extremely minor soundness issue (pencil writing on the back) reduces the grade further. The heavy black cancel obscures most of Washington’s profile, lowering the eye appeal. Factoring in centering, soundness, and cancellation, the stamp earns a final grade of 36 (Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
