Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #674 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)5¢ Blue – Theodore Roosevelt with “Nebr.” Overprint, 1929
(Fourth Bureau Issue – Kansas–Nebraska Overprints, Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #674 is part of the 1929 Kansas–Nebraska overprint series. The design features a finely engraved portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt, framed by an ornamental oval and inscribed “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” at the top. Large numeral tablets flank “CENTS” at the bottom. The overprint “Nebr.” is applied in black across the design, serving as a postal control measure to limit misuse of postage in specific states.
This example is unused, never hinged, and retains its full original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 31 (Good)
The perforations cut well into the design, with loss of portions of the frameline, particularly at the top. The top margin is the most narrow, the bottom the widest, with the left margin tighter than the right. The extent of intrusion into the design aligns with PSE’s Good centering classification.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp is structurally intact with full gum. A natural gum bend is present on the reverse, classified as an Extremely Minor Fault under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Classification: Extremely Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –1
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides. Teeth are complete with no trimming or reperforation. Margins follow the centering notes: top very tight, bottom generous, left slightly narrower than right.
Cancellation Classification:
None. This is an unused stamp with no cancellation present.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp retains vibrant blue color and a sharp impression. The gum bend is not visible from the front, and no additional deductions or bonuses apply.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
