Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #706 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)1½¢ Brown – George Washington, 1932
(1932 Washington Bicentennial Issue – Engraved Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #706 is a 1½¢ brown engraved stamp issued in 1932 as part of the Washington Bicentennial series. The design depicts George Washington in military uniform within an arched frame, flanked by vertical columns. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” across the top arch, the denomination in numerals at the bottom corners, and the years 1732 and 1932. The stamp was printed using engraved intaglio methods and is perforated 11 on all sides.
The example submitted is unused, never hinged, and retains full original gum. While it displays strong color and detail, centering and minor faults reduce its grade.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 71 (Fine)
The perforations come very close to the design at the top and left sides, though a small margin of white space remains visible to the unaided eye. The bottom margin is the widest, and the right margin is wider than the left, producing a noticeable imbalance. These factors place the centering squarely in the Fine range.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp has two extremely minor faults: one shorter perforation (about half the normal length) and a minor natural gum bend. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, these combined faults qualify the stamp for a Very Minor Fault soundness classification.
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –10 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is perforated 11 on all sides as expected. Except for the single shorter perforation, the remaining perforations are intact and consistent. There is no indication of trimming or reperforation. The top margin is the narrowest, while the bottom margin is the widest.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp maintains strong brown color and clean paper. The gum bend and shorter perforation are not visually distracting from the front. No adjustment is made for eye appeal.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 71 (Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –10 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 61
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 61 (Very Good/Fine – VG/F)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 706
Condition: Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 71 (Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (shorter perforation, minor gum bend)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact with one shorter tip
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 61 (Very Good/Fine – VG/F)
Final Verdict:
This unused, never hinged example of Scott #706 shows Fine centering with intact perforations and strong color. Minor faults, including a shorter perforation and a natural gum bend, reduce the grade to 61 (Very Good/Fine) according to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
