Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #711 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)6¢ Orange – George Washington, 1932
(Washington Bicentennial Issue – Engraved, Perf 11, Flat Plate Printing)
Design Overview:
Scott #711 is the 6¢ orange issue from the 1932 Washington Bicentennial commemorative series. The design features a right-facing bust of George Washington in military attire, set within a rectangular frame. The inscription “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” appears in an arched panel at the top, while “WASHINGTON” is flanked by the commemorative dates “1732” and “1932” below. The denomination “6” is shown in the bottom corners with “CENTS” at the base. This flat plate-printed issue was produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and is perforated 11.
The stamp is unused, previously hinged, and retains full original gum. It presents strongly from the front with bright color and a crisp impression.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
All four margins are clearly separated from the perforation holes. The bottom margin is the widest, while the top is the narrowest. The left margin is narrower than the right, but all margins exceed the minimum threshold of 0.4mm for Fine/Very Fine centering. The design is well balanced and easily qualifies for a centering grade of 78.
Soundness Evaluation:
This stamp displays only one issue—a very minor, natural gum bend. As per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, this constitutes an Extremely Minor Fault and does not materially affect the stamp’s marketability or physical integrity.
Soundness Classification: Extremely Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –5 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is perforated 11 as expected. All perforations are intact and well formed, with no short, fuzzy, or ragged teeth. There are no signs of trimming or alteration. The spacing and alignment are consistent with the assigned centering grade.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp shows vibrant orange color, sharp detail, and clean surfaces. The gum bend does not detract from the visual presentation and is not visible from the front. No eye appeal adjustment is warranted.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –5 (Extremely Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 73
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 73 (Fine – F)
Final Summary:

Final Verdict:
