Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #715 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)10¢ Yellow – George Washington, 1932
(Washington Bicentennial Issue – Engraved, Perf 11, Flat Plate Printing)
Design Overview:
Scott #715 is the 10¢ bright yellow entry in the 1932 Washington Bicentennial commemorative series. It features a portrait of George Washington in an oval, framed by a Baroque-inspired arch and scroll motif. The legend “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” arches across the top, and the commemorative dates “1732 – WASHINGTON – 1932” run across the oval base. Denominations of “10” in boxes occupy the bottom corners, with “CENTS” centered beneath. The stamp was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using flat plate methods and perforated 11.
This example is unused, never hinged, and retains original gum. However, the overall presentation and physical integrity are significantly affected by its faults and centering.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 54 (Very Good)
The design on the right side cuts into the frame, with the perforations visibly touching or entering the design area. The left margin is the widest, followed by the bottom. Top is narrower, and right is the most problematic. Per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, these characteristics clearly align with a Very Good centering classification.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp has a visible light crease, classified as a Minor Fault, and a natural gum bend on the reverse, which is considered an Extremely Minor Fault. In total, these faults elevate the soundness classification to Minor Fault.
Soundness Classification: Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is correctly perforated 11. While the edges are fully perforated, the alignment causes the design to be clipped on the right side. The rest of the margins are intact but uneven. No other perforation irregularities are visible.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Despite the centering issues, the stamp has a strong, vibrant yellow color and well-struck impressions. There is no significant surface discoloration or distraction on the face. Therefore, no eye appeal adjustment is necessary.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 54 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 34
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 34 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 715
Condition: Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 54 (Very Good)
Soundness: Minor Fault (light crease, gum bend)
Perforations: Perf 11, full, right side clips design
Eye Appeal: No adjustment applied
Final Grade: 34 (Good – G)
Final Verdict:
While the vibrant color and crisp printing help maintain front-facing appeal, the design cut on the right side and the presence of a light crease limit this stamp’s standing. According to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, Scott #715 earns a final grade of 34 (Good).
