Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #715 (Unused, Hinged – Single Stamp)10¢ Yellow – George Washington, 1932
(Washington Bicentennial Series – Engraved, Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #715 is a 10¢ yellow engraved commemorative stamp from the 1932 Washington Bicentennial series. It features a bust of George Washington facing slightly left, based on a portrait by Charles Willson Peale. The portrait is encased in an arched frame with ornamental embellishments and inscriptions reading “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” above and “1782 WASHINGTON 1932” below. The denomination “10 CENTS 10” is printed within rectangular tablets at the lower corners. The stamp was produced using flat plate printing on unwatermarked paper and is perforated 11 on all four sides.
The submitted example is unused with original gum and has been hinged. It shows decent centering but is marred by several condition issues that reduce its final numerical grade.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 52 (Very Good)
The perforations nearly touch or appear to touch the design on the right side, placing the stamp firmly within the Very Good centering category. The right margin is the most narrow, followed by the top, while the left and bottom margins are slightly more generous. Margins are uneven overall, with a rightward and upward shift in the image. The design still remains largely intact, but the off-center layout clearly places the stamp at the lower end of the PSE centering scale.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp exhibits a combination of minor faults: a hinge remnant and a corner perforation crease (both classified as very minor faults), along with a minor natural gum bend (an extremely minor fault). According to the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, this combination results in a Minor Fault designation.
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all four sides, the stamp’s perforations are complete and structurally sound. However, the right-side perforation holes are quite close to the design and appear slightly ragged. The rest are intact but reflect the slight imbalance of the image within the frame.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The stamp retains bright yellow coloration and a crisp impression. The faults are not visually distracting from the front, and the crease and hinge remnant are only visible on the reverse. These do not diminish the stamp’s overall visual character enough to warrant an additional eye appeal deduction.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 52 (Very Good)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 32
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 32 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 715
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 52 (Very Good)
Soundness: Minor Fault (corner perf crease, hinge remnant, gum bend)
Perforations: Perf 11, complete but narrowly spaced on the right
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 32 (Good – G)
Final Verdict:
This unused, hinged example of Scott #715 has adequate centering and vibrant color, but the proximity of the design to the perforations and several minor faults lower the final grade. It earns a score of 32 (Good) under the standards of the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
