Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #727 (Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum – Single Stamp)3¢ Violet – Washington’s Headquarters, Newburgh, N.Y., 1933
(Washington Bicentennial Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #727 was issued in 1933 as part of the Washington Bicentennial commemoratives, marking the 150th anniversary of Washington’s headquarters in Newburgh, New York (1783). The design depicts Washington’s stone headquarters building with surrounding trees and landscape, framed in a horizontal format. The inscriptions include “U.S. POSTAGE” at the top, “WASHINGTON’S HEADQUARTERS NEWBURGH N.Y. 1783–1933” below, and “THREE CENTS” spelled out at the bottom with numerals in the corners. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, this issue was produced by flat plate printing and perforated 11. This example is postally used, has never been hinged, and retains no original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine – F/VF)
The perforations are clear of the design, though margins are slightly uneven. The right margin is the narrowest, the top margin is also somewhat narrow, while the bottom is the most generous. This fits PSE’s Fine/Very Fine centering standard: clear design with one or two sides narrow.
Soundness Evaluation:
The following faults are present:
Minor Fault: Several perf creases visible on close examination.
This qualifies as a Minor Fault per the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides, as expected for this issue. Perforations are intact, though slightly affected by creasing. Margins remain full but unevenly distributed, consistent with the assigned centering grade.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp bears a bold black cancellation reading “CAMELTO, NEBR” in large letters across the vignette. The strike obscures significant portions of the design, including the central building and surrounding landscape. This qualifies as a Heavy to Very Heavy cancel under the PSE guidelines, significantly detracting from the clarity of the vignette.
Collector’s Note:
Washington Bicentennial commemoratives are popular among U.S. collectors, particularly for their historical subjects. However, bold slogan or large-letter cancels across the vignette generally reduce desirability compared to lighter strikes.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –15 points
The cancel is oversized and obliterates much of the design. Combined with perf creases, this reduces overall presentation despite the strong violet color.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 57 (Very Good)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –15
Final Grade: 42 (Good/Very Good – G/VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 727
Condition: Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (perf creases)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact but creased
Cancellation: Heavy, oversized cancel obscuring vignette
Eye Appeal: –15 point deduction due to heavy cancel
Final Grade: 42 (Good/Very Good – G/VG)
Final Verdict:
This used example of Scott #727 shows Fine/Very Fine centering but suffers from perf creases and a bold oversized cancel that obscures much of the design. These factors reduce the grade to Good/Very Good (42). It remains a lower-grade space-filler within the Washington Bicentennial series under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
