Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #728 (Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – Fort Dearborn, 1933
(Chicago Century of Progress Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #728 was issued in 1933 as part of the Chicago World’s Fair “Century of Progress” commemorative set. The design features Fort Dearborn, an early Chicago landmark, framed by trees, with “CHICAGO CENTURY OF PROGRESS” inscribed in an arc above. The years “1833” and “1933” appear at the upper corners, and “FORT DEARBORN” is shown below the vignette. The denomination “1¢” is displayed in tablets at each lower corner. This example is postally used, never hinged, and has no original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 70 (Fine – F)
The design comes very close to the perforations at the top but retains visible white space. Margins are unbalanced, with the top the narrowest, the left the widest, and the right narrower than the bottom. This matches PSE’s definition of Fine centering.
Soundness Evaluation:
Very Minor Fault: Corner perf crease
Very Minor Fault: Perf tip crease (x2)
These multiple very minor defects together classify the stamp under “Minor Fault” per the 2009 PSE Soundness Table.
Soundness Deduction: –30 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all sides, consistent with the issue. While intact, several perforation tips show creasing, including one corner. Margins confirm Fine centering with tightness at the top.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp bears a bold black machine cancel with lettering and bars crossing directly over the vignette. The strike obscures parts of the fort design, classifying it as a heavy cancel under PSE guidelines.
Collector’s Note:
Machine cancels are common for this issue, but lighter or CDS strikes are much more desirable for preserving design clarity.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –5
The heavy cancel placement across the vignette reduces overall presentation, though the green ink remains fresh and well-printed.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 70 (Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –30 (Minor Fault classification)
Adjusted Base Grade: 40
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –5 (Heavy cancel placement)
Final Grade: 35 (Good – G)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 728
Condition: Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 70 (Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (corner perf crease, multiple perf tip creases)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact but with several creased tips
Cancellation: Heavy machine cancel across vignette
Eye Appeal: –5 deduction for cancel placement
Final Grade: 35 (Good – G)
Final Verdict:
Although showing Fine centering, the combination of several very minor faults and a heavy machine cancel reduces this Scott #728 to a final grade of 35 (Good) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. It remains a collectible but modest example of the Century of Progress commemorative issue.
