Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #762 (Unused, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)7¢ Black – Acadia, 1935
(National Parks Series – Rotary Press Printing, Imperforate)
Design Overview:
Scott #762 is a 7¢ imperforate commemorative stamp from the 1935 National Parks series. The design features a scenic view of Acadia National Park, showing coastal cliffs with the sea and a small sailboat in the background. "ACADIA" is centered in the bottom frame, while "U.S. POSTAGE" and "SEVEN CENTS" appear vertically along the left and right sides, respectively. The denomination “7¢” is enclosed in a circular medallion in the upper right. These stamps were issued in imperforate panes of six for collectors, never intended for general postal use.
The submitted example is unused, and has not been previously hinged. The front design is crisp, with excellent color contrast and detail.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
The stamp exhibits full margins clear of the design on all sides. The bottom margin is the narrowest, while the top is the widest. The left margin is narrower than the right, producing a subtle diagonal imbalance from lower left to upper right. The design is still comfortably framed and fits the criteria for Fine/Very Fine centering under the PSE guidelines for imperforates.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp has no tears, creases, thins, or paper flaws. However, there is noticeable black ink offset on the reverse from contact with an adjacent printed stamp. While this does not affect the visual appeal of the front, it qualifies as a very minor fault under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –7 points
Perforations and Margins:
This imperforate stamp is cut cleanly on all four sides, with straight and squared edges. There is no evidence of trimming into the design, and all margins are intact. The corners remain sharp and squared.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The face of the stamp is visually striking, with solid black ink coverage, sharp impression, and no distracting marks. The reverse ink offset does not detract from the front’s presentation. No eye appeal deduction or bonus is applicable.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –7 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 72 (Fine – F)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 762
Condition: Unused, Never Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (ink transfer on reverse)
Perforations: Imperforate – full margins, straight edges
Eye Appeal: No deduction or bonus applied
Final Grade: 72 (Fine – F)
Final Verdict:
This unused, never hinged example of Scott #762 presents cleanly from the front with strong detail and above-average centering. While the ink offset on the back warrants a small deduction, the stamp still earns a solid 72 (Fine) under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
